Learn to Play "Be Not Afraid"

Your living space!

Thursday, Oct 29, 7:30 EDT – Join me in learning a solo mountain dulcimer arrangement of “Be Not Afraid,” a Christian hymn written in 1973 by the Jesuit priest, Robert Dufford. The hymn is now included in hymnals of every Christian denomination, and it is a song that gives inspiration in a time of grief. Bill Clinton had the song played at the church service he attended on the morning of his inauguration in 1993. He wrote in his autobiography that the song was “one of my favorite hymns and a good lesson for the day.” Most humbling for Fr. Dufford was when he learned Sister Helen Prejean, known for her work to end the death penalty, often sang “Be Not Afraid” to inmates on death row. The song was sung by Susan Sarandon in her portrayal of Sister Prejean in the 1995 movie “Dead Man Walking.”

The arrangement is in the key of G and will require a 1.5 fret. It is appropriate for the upper intermediate level player who is familiar with the chord-melody style of playing and is comfortable playing in an arpeggiated fashion across the fretboard. Participants in the class will also receive an audio recording as well as an accompaniment track.
